Silk:

1 hour heat madder chips in water and strain ( medium low heat). 1 hour 45 minutes dye heat on medium low. 9 hours sit in dye bath. Rinse and wash next day.

  • 9.4 g alum (8%)

  • 112.04 g silk
  • 112.04 g madder
  • 9.96 g alum (8%)

3)

  • 119.39 g silk
  • 119.3 g madder
  • 9.55 g alum (8%)

4)

  • 89.3 g silk
  • 89.3 g madder
  • 7.14 g alum (8%)

Second Bath Items:

  • 104.5 g BFL yarn
  • 17.21 g cotton yarn
  • 24.41 g cotton fabric
  • 12 g alum (8%)

Heat in second dye bath 1 hour 40 minutes. Let cool overnight. Repeat total 4 times. Rinse and wash.

Acid Dye – Tunic Green

50/50/5 BFL

  • 50.96 g yarn
  • 5.96 citric acid
  • 5.96 g salt
  • .596 g (base total) dye
    • .298 g yellow
    • .298 g blue
    • 0.29 g black

Soak yarn in citric acid & water

Add salt to water and heat medium low 30 min

1 hour medium low in dye pot

Let cool in dye water.

Soak yarn in citric acid and water. Add salt to water and heat medium low 45 minutes. 1 hour medium low in dye pot. Let cool in dye water.

Soak yarn in citric acid bath – 30 minutes. Dye bath med low 175 deg F – 30 minutes. Let set overnight. Wash and dry.

10/4/2020 –

11:19 am – Remove some samples from garden madder dye water and wash. Not written: Hold other samples to overdye in water until dye bath is ready. Heat bath to med low 175 deg F for 1 hour.

12:19 pm – Switch burner to low. Stir in alum and madder.

1:19 pm – Strain root and add fiber. Dye for 1 hour at med low 175 deg F.

Let sit overnight. Wash and dry.

Natural Dye – Madder (Garden)

Cotton Yarn – Bamboo Yarn – Cotton Fabric

  • 2 year old madder root from the garden – 175.41 g
  • 205.08 g fiber
  • 16.4 g alum 8%

10/3/2020 –

12:38pm- Washed and chopped (madder roots). Let sit to oxidize.

1:11 pm – Turn on burner low 100 deg F and add water to roots.

3:14 pm – Strain out roots. Stir in alum. Add wet fiber.

1 1/2 hour on low heat. Let sit overnight. Wash and dry.

Natural Dye – Acorn Shells

The bottom index card has 5 dye samples stapled to it. There are 4 fabric strips in linen, linen/rayon, bleached muslin, and natural muslin and 1 cotton yarn. They are all in shades of a light beige/tan color. The linen/rayon is a little more grey than the others. The natural muslin is a little more brown than the others.

Linen Fabric – Linen/Rayon Fabric – Bleached Muslin Fabric – Natural Muslin Fabric – Cotton Yarn

Mordant: Alum 8% dry weight 12/13/18 – 12/14/18

  • Acorns soaked in water for 24 hours
  • Acorns simmered low/medium heat in water for 1 hour and drained
  • Fabric added dry, cotton yarn added damp*
  • Dye bath for 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Let cool in dye water in plastic bag
  • air dry
  • Washed in machine and dryer dry low

*except half sample dipped in 1 week old iron modifier
